What do I enjoy about working remotely?

My job as a Pre-Service Coordinator is 100% remote, meaning that I don't have an office to drive to for my job. Remote jobs are highly sought after, and I anticipate that to remain the case with the state of the pandemic. Here are the 3 things I enjoy most about working remotely.

1) I can work anywhere in the United States

Prior to taking my job as a Pre-Service Coordinator, I was unaware that I could work outside my home. I brought it up with my manager because my wife's parents live out of state and we were hoping to see them for the holidays. With all my past jobs, I had to use PTO whenever I was going to leave town. Fortunately, it was confirmed that I can work anywhere in the United States as long as I can keep HIPAA compliance and be connected by VPN. I was able to schedule our flights so that we could stay longer knowing that I could save my PTO and work at my in-law's house!

The past 2 days I did a test run of what it would be like working outside of my house by visiting my parents who live 4 hours away from where I reside. My parents are in the process of trying to sell their house and I tried to see what I could do to assist them. The last 3 times I went to see my parents, I had to use PTO because I was working in home health. I am grateful that I could work at their house, help my parents with the more physically demanding tasks, and not use any PTO in the process!

2) More time with my family

I have a wife and 2 young children. Prior to working remotely, I rarely saw them during my work day, and I don't believe I ever had lunch with them. My job allows for a break before lunch, a 1 hour lunch and a break after lunch. I see my family each of those times and hope to not take that for granted.

I mentioned previously in my 1st blog post that a lot of extra work at home was involved as a clinician in home health. My job does not require any additional time outside of work, and it has allowed me to be more present with my family. I can honestly say this has been the best work/life balance I have experienced because work is done once I leave my office.

3) I meet my cardio goals while I work

This isn't the case for everyone that works remotely, but it is for me. I personally do not enjoy cardio and will likely not run a marathon in my lifetime. However, I can do low to moderate intensity cardio using my Cubii while I review charts. There are other products out there similar to Cubii, but I bought it back when it was a Kickstarter in 2015. It has held up very well for me >5 years later. I honestly don't keep diligent records of what I do but I know I exceed 1 hour a day, which is good since I would otherwhile be very sedentary at my desk.
